Maysville Community and Technical College was recently awarded a $1,004,000 grant to build a welding training facility on their Montgomery County campus.
MCTC has a welding training facility on its Rowan County campus, but it’s currently at full capacity. Officials said the college is expanding its program to add instructional space and increase scheduling capacity.
Shana Savard-Hogge, Director of Grants at MCTC, said the college’s welding program is highly affordable, and local scholarships are available to help students cover the cost.
“Many students from the MCTC service region are eligible for the Work Ready Kentucky scholarship that would eliminate the majority of the tuition costs for students,” said Savard-Hogge.
According to Savard-Hogge, the school’s mission is to prepare students to enter the workforce, so the college partners with local businesses.
“It’s really important, when you’re talking about providing educational programs and opportunities to students, to make sure that there is a foundation in what the local economy needs, what those workforce needs are,” said Savard-Hogge.
Kentucky officials expect to see a six percent growth in the welding industry within the next decade. Officials said MCTC’s new facility will help meet the growing demand for qualified welders.
The facility is expected to have a total economic impact of $54 million over the next nine years, supporting economic growth and job creation in the Montgomery County area.
