Morehead State builds two new parking lots on former gym and health building sites

Adam Miller

Morehead State University is going to have two new parking lots soon. They will be located on the sites of the recently demolished Laughlin Health Building and Weatherby Gymnasium. Both facilities were torn down over the summer. One of the lots will be used for student parking and the other for employees.

Kim Oatman is the Associate Vice President for Capital Construction and Chief Facilities Officer for MSU. He said the Weatherby lot is already open and has 167 parking spaces. This will help make up for the loss of the parking spaces in front of the MSU Space Science Center.

“Yes, it’s more than that I think that lot had about a hundred and thirty,” said Oatman.

The lot in front of the Space Science Center has been closed for the construction of a new dormitory. Oatman added the Laughlin parking lot will be completed in the spring and will use the foundations of the old health building rather than completely tearing it out.

“So, it’s really good strong foundations and stuff, up high. So rather than tearing those good foundations out just to get down at a lower level, we’re going to leave those in. And we’re going to pave the interior of those on the inside of that. Then we’re going to have a barrier all around the perimeter of some sort,” said Oatman.

In addition to the old Laughlin foundation, a structure housing electrical equipment has been left standing. Oatman said the building will be retained and given a new exterior to be completed by the end of the year. The team will also retain the green space around the obelisk and Morehead State University sign at the main entrance to campus.

The Weatherby (for students) and Laughlin (for employees) lots combined will provide around 350 parking spaces.
