Deadlines approach for Kentucky voters in upcoming election

Samantha Morrill

The Kentucky County Clerk’s Association predicted the upcoming 2024 general election will see a voter turnout in Rowan County similar in size to the crowd the 2020 election brought out. Ahead of election seasons, officials urge residents to make sure they are prepared to exercise their rights. That means registering to vote and staying aware of dates for absentee and early voting.

Voter registration must be done by October 7, either in person or online. This includes anyone requesting an absentee ballot, which is available for people who will be out of town during Election Day or early voting days. Absentee ballots are also encouraged for disabled or elderly participants who cannot physically vote in person.

Elwood Caudill Jr. is the Rowan County Clerk. He said absentee ballots operate on a system of good faith, trusting voters to be truthful about their inability to come to the polls for a variety of reasons. Caudill said the system hasn’t caused the county any issues.

“You do have to sign that you are disabled, you are of age, and here, really, we do not have that problem. Most people are, they vote absentee every time,” said Caudill. “We see it by age or disability most of the time.”

Absentee ballots can be requested from September 21 through October 22, and officials said people are encouraged to mail out their ballots as soon as possible to ensure they are counted.

No-excuse, in-person early voting will also be available October 31 through November 2. Caudill said early voting is an easy and secure way for people with busy schedules or other obligations to get their ballot in.

“That vote counts just the same as it does on Election Day, on November 5. That will decrease the lines on election day if you utilize those three days. People just need to have their driver’s license ready, or any other form of ID that’s listed that’s allowed,” said Caudill.

Kentuckians can register to vote or request an absentee ballot online at govoteky.gov or by calling their County Clerk’s office.
