By the end of the year, all residents of Morehead will be using new garbage cans issued by the city. Officials said the new “tipper cans” have become the primary garbage can of many other cities in the region and will now be required in Morehead. The cans have wheels and secured lids, which officials said allows them to hold more weight and be easily moved.
Morehead City Planner, Rodney Fouch, said the cans have become a popular option.
“A lot of cities have started doing this instead of having two or three smaller cans, that the lids blow off, and they are small enough to fall over and heavy, and don’t have wheels. We’re going to be putting tipper cans at every residence,” said Fouch.
Fouch added that public works officials will benefit from the new cans, because of their improved mobility.
“It’s way better for our public works guys, because you don’t have to lift the can up and dump it into the back of a trash truck. There’s a mechanical arm on the truck that hooks onto the new can and dumps it for them,” said Fouch.
Officials said the new cans will be owned and under warranty by the City of Morehead. The general public will be required to use the new cans once they have been issued. Businesses may continue to use privately owned waste disposal companies if they choose. The rollout of new garbage cans is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
