Officials give update on new businesses coming to Morehead

A slew of new businesses are establishing themselves in the Morehead community.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, officials gave updates on construction timelines for several businesses opening branches in Morehead.

Jason Slone is the President and CEO of the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce. He said the Huck’s Convenience Store currently underway near the I-64 exit is nearly completed.

“They’re in the final stages of building, and their timeline on that is looking more or less like they’re going to take control of the building probably somewhere by mid- to late February. They will begin their hiring push in late January and ramping up to that,” he said. “They look to be able to have that in place, ready to go, somewhere by mid-March.”

Additionally, Slone said more steps are being taken toward breaking ground in Morehead on Eastern Light Distilling’s new bourbon distillery.

“They are seeking to probably begin construction on this process in Q1 of this year, to second quarter of ’24 at the latest somewhere,” he said. “Timeline on that is to have the distillery itself fully operational by the end of 2025, or Q4 of ’25. That will include the infrastructure, the distillery, and at least two rickhouses to begin with.”

Huey Magoo’s, a new chicken restaurant coming to Morehead, has a planned completion date of mid-March, according to City Planner Rodney Fouch.
