This may not be the season to be thinking about bees, but a group in Morehead is buzzing about them. The Honey and Bee Connection announced the start of a beekeeper’s club in Rowan County called ‘Appalachian Beekeepers Association’.
Founder Tim Black said the club aims to provide new and potential beekeepers with proper information that can often be hard to find. Black said a group like this could be instrumental in emphasizing the importance of keeping a healthy population of bees in the area.
“Well, without bees and pollinators like bumblebees and different things, we would not have anything to eat, we wouldn’t have any flowers, the trees wouldn’t do right, nothing would grow right if they are not pollinated by bees,” said Black.
Black said he wants the beekeeper’s club to be a place where people can get hands-on answers to their questions. The club will also help with possible bee removals from homes.
“Bees are very expensive to buy, and those are basically free bees they can get to put in their apiaries.”
The first meeting is set to take place December 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the MSU Farm arena.
