MSU Board of Regents Addresses Faculty Grievance

Morehead State University

The Morehead State University Board of Regents spent more than 3 hours in executive session Thursday to discuss a grievance filed by Faculty Regent Annie Adams against Morehead State University President Jay Morgan.

Adams claimed the removal of the Faculty Regent’s course release (a precedent set in 1986) was a personal retaliation against her and took the complaint to the Faculty Rights and Responsibility Committee. A course release is a reduction in the number of classes a faculty member is expected to teach and is often approved when faculty are completing other tasks for the university, such as serving in administrative roles.

That committee made a recommendation to the Board, which was discussed in a closed session last month, and again Thursday.

Once the board returned to the regular meeting, Chair Eric Howard said the course release would not be reinstated, and had been removed in order to comply with Kentucky Revised Statutes.

In the statement, Howard reiterated that shared governance, respect, and transparency were already in place, as recommended by the Faculty rights and responsibilities committee. The board also encouraged the faculty senate to review its policies to provide alternative recommendation channels if a future Petition of Grievance names the University President.
