Over 8,200 Rowan County residents will have access to high-speed fiber internet by the end of the year through Kinetic by Windstream.

Company, state and local officials gathered for a celebration of Kentucky’s latest broadband expansion at Rowan County Middle School Friday.  The project is part of a $2-billion multi-year initiative by Windstream to expand broadband in its 18 state coverage area.

Speaking at Friday’s event, Rowan County Judge-Executive Harry Clark says the number of households without good internet in the county became very apparent in recent history.

Windstream CEO Tony Thomas also spoke at the event, saying projects like these are only possible when there is collaboration at all levels.

Clark also announced the Rowan County Fiscal Court and Windstream have applied for support from the Kentucky Broadband Deployment Fund to build fiber-to-the-home gig service to an additional 4,169 homes. If the state support is awarded, it will enable fiber deployment through much of the county.
