The senior games in Morehead got a little "wicket" Thursday.
Kent Freeland, a croquet player and former Morehead State University professor, said when he was a kid he would play in his backyard and didn’t play again for almost 50 years.
After he heard of the opportunity to meet new people and compete in his hometown, he was very excited.
“This is the first tournament we’ve had in a long time, but it’s big in other parts of the nation,” said Dean Rowland, who helps guide the tournaments.
The croquet tournaments are held once a year by the Kentucky Senior Games at the Morehead City Park. The croquet and bocce courts there are kept up by Morehead City Parks and Recreation.
According to their website, the goal of the senior games is to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for those above the age of 50.
The tournament started with six players, where they had two games with three participants. They held the semi-finals, and eventually had a winner.
Rowland, a Morehead native, has won the tournament for two years in a row.
He got within six inches of the stake and all of a sudden hit the ball clear across the court in order to help his partner, said Frank Miklavcic, Kentucky Senior Games board member.
“I learned a lot about croquet that night,” said Miklavcic.
The Kentucky Senior Games hold several tournaments across the nation with a variety of different sporting options. Some of those include archery, track and field, softball and many other challenging sports.
