Flemingsburg Drug Collection Oct. 15-22

The Police Department will be collecting prescription medications every day between Oct. 15-22.

Flemingsburg Police Chief Randy Sergent said the department normally allows collection every Saturday between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., but for one week, the collection will be open every day.

"The (Drug Enforcement Agency) does a national push twice a year to collect prescription medications safely," Sergent said. "They do it one weekend in the spring and one in the fall. Our office thought we would add to that weekend and just make it a whole week."

Sergent said any member of the public can drop off medications. However, it is not open to businesses.

"They will have their own programs," he said. "This is only for the public."

According to Sergent, the reason behind the collection is to make sure people have a safe place to drop off medications to keep them out of sewer systems and garbage.

"A lot of people don't realize the harm in sending medications into the sewer system," he said. "This way, people can dispose of medications properly."

Sergent said the DEA will collect the medications the following Monday. Everything will be incinerated.

"They can choose to remove the labels with personal information, if they want," Sergent said. "But, the DEA will incinerate everything, so there shouldn't be any issues."

The collection box will be sitting out front of the police department building for anyone interested in disposing of old medications.
