KBEMS Celebrates National EMS Week, May 15-21

Santa Cruz Health

The Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS) is celebrating National EMS Week May 15-21.

This year’s theme is, “Called to Care.” Kentucky’s EMS heroes provide outstanding day-to-day practice of patient care, provider and patient safety, community awareness and injury prevention.

“We hear people say it’s a calling to work in the medical field, and I believe that’s true,” said KBEMS Executive Director Michael Poynter. “People don’t go into this field because of high pay or good working hours. They do it because they want to help people and serve their communities. This week is the perfect time to thank all of our EMS workers for answering their calling and for their devotion to patient care.”

EMS Week was established by President Gerald Ford in 1974 to honor emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, first responders, emergency physicians, nurses, educators and administrators.

The Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS) brings lifesaving, emergency medical care to the Commonwealth by certifying first responders and Emergency Medical Technicians, providing licenses to paramedics and ambulance services and establishing standards for education and training of Emergency Medical Services personnel.

KBEMS is also a participant in the EMS for Children Program, which encourages providers to improve their pediatric skills and increase public awareness regarding the health and safety of children. For more information on KBEMS, visit: http://kbems.kctcs.edu

The KBEMS mission is to ensure availability of high quality emergency medical services for Kentucky through effective oversight, communication, education and collaboration with EMS providers.  KBEMS is an initiative of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
