A bill permitting the research and medicinal use of cannabis oil to treat neurological disorders has cleared the Kentucky House.
Senate Bill 124 passed by a unanimous vote on Wednesday (March 26), and would let the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky study cannabidiol, which a growing body of research shows is effective at treating incurable forms of epilepsy in children.
Rep. John Tilley shepherded the bill through the House, and was visibly moved by its passage.
“I can’t imagine the daily struggles. I have trouble with my children, just making sure that I’m always, they have a fresh diaper maybe, or they’re well fed or their teeth are brushed, but these families are dealing with some overwhelming things,” said Tilley.
With that bill passed, Tilley says he’s open to looking at the medicinal properties of cannabidiol’s cousin, the psychoactive THC contained in marijuana, if it can help people.
The bill now heads back to the Senate for final approval before it heads to the governor’s desk for signing.
