Help with Student Diabetes Needed

KET

Several diabetes-related organizations in Kentucky want state lawmakers to allow teachers and staff to administer insulin injections for students who have Type One Diabetes. They made their case in Frankfort Wednesday before a panel of state senators and representatives.

The groups, including the American Diabetes Association, say 22 other states permit volunteers who are trained to do so administer those shots under the supervision of a school nurse. They say a nurse is not always available for the injections during an emergency and that’s why it’s essential others be ready, too.

Laurie Bradley is from Mercer County and is the mother of a 15-year-old boy who has the disease…

The Kentucky Board of Nursing says it does not oppose allowing people who aren’t nurses to administer the injections…but wants assurances that those who do are properly trained.
