Education is strongly correlated with good health outcomes, and neither is frequently seen in Eastern Kentucky. The Robinson Scholars Program serves first generation high school and college students in 29 impoverished Eastern Kentucky counties. Selection for the program begins early in high school, looking for students with a track record of service to their community, academic excellence, and leadership. In addition to a generous college scholarship, students also get assistance in transitioning from rural high schools to the UK college environment. Jeff Spradling runs the program, and he’s our guest.

Tip: education is important to health. Those with a college degree at 40% lower rates of heart attack, 28% lower rates of stroke, and 27% lower rates of diabetes compared to high school graduates.
