Ohio Ballot Features Proposed Recreational Marijuana Ammendment

KDVR

Ohioans are deciding a Constitutional Amendment in Tuesday’s election that, if approved, would legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Tonya Davis is with Responsible Ohioans for Cannabis and she’s been campaigning for the issue. She says state lawmakers have repeatedly ignored her appeals for a medical marijuana law.

However, Dr. Gary LeRoy with the Wright State University School of Medicine says allowing recreational consumption of marijuana could be harmful to children.

Ian James is director of Responsible Ohio, which has been campaigning for the issue. He says approval of the amendment would reduce costs for many people who’ve tried to obtain a derivative of the drug for medical purposes.

The amendment is opposed by the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. The organization’s Chris Kershner says farms that decide to grow marijuana commercially would not be able to deposit their profits. He says they won’t find banks with which they can do business.

If approved, Ohio would become the nation’s fifth state to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes.
