Kentucky Candidates Look Towards Tuesday's Election

Arizona Capitol Times

Democrat Jack Conway is expressing confidence heading into Tuesday’s gubernatorial election in Kentucky.

Most polls show him with a lead of about five points over Republican Matt Bevin. Conway says the polls look good but it’s important to get supporters to actually cast their ballots.

Both candidates are campaigning aggressively in the final hours of the contest. Conway spoke with CN2’s Pure Politics.

Matt Bevin is doing the same thing.

Campaigning in Louisville last weekend with Senator Mitch McConnell, Bevin urged voters to size up the candidates on the issues and make their decision accordingly. Bevin insists that the values of the Republican ticket align with those of most Kentuckians.

Both Bevin and Conway campaigned on Monday in Boyd County, in addition to many other places all over the state.

Based on requests for absentee ballots, the Secretary of State’s office believes turnout will be around 28 percent.

A low voter turnout for Tuesday’s election could end up hurting Republicans more than Democrats. The conventional wisdom is that a lack of enthusiasm for the top of the ticket hurts that party’s other candidates for constitutional offices.

One of those Republican contenders is Allison Ball, a Prestonsburg attorney who is running for State Treasurer.

Ball faces State Representive Rick Nelson in Tuesday’s election. Nelson is a retired teacher from Middlesboro who chairs the Industry and Labor Committee in the House.
