Rep. Sinnette Supports Local Option Sales Tax

A bill that could give cities and counties the option of placing sales tax issues on their local ballots to fund capital projects appears unlikely to pass in this session of the Kentucky General Assembly.

That’s the view of State Representative Kevin Sinnette. The Ashland Democrat says that’s too bad because he likes the idea.

“I believe it’s a good initiative, it’s the purest form of democracy. In our area, being eastern Kentucky, you know Louisville/Lexington, they have the Yum Center…they have Rupp Arena. I don’t have any place that I can house conventions. I can’t bring any state conventions…I can’t do anything because I don’t have the facilities to do that.”

Sinnette says a lot of people still don’t understand the proposed local option sales tax. The bill before the General Assembly would put the issue on the statewide ballot as a constitutional amendment.

If approved, local governments could then submit sales tax issues to their voters to pay for major construction projects. The taxes would sunset when the work is completed.
