Special Election Called to Fill 27th Senate District Seat

Walter Blevins

Governor Steve Beshear today set a special election date to fill a vacant legislative seat in the 27th Senate district. Senator Walter Blevins resigned his office effective Jan. 4 in order to serve as Rowan County Judge-executive.

The special election will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. The 27th Senate district includes Bourbon, Fleming, Harrison, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, Robertson and Rowan counties.

“Because a special election requires at least 56 days notice, the earliest special election date would be March 3,” said Gov. Beshear.

“While this will allow the newly-elected Senator to participate only in the last few days of the upcoming legislative session, it is important that the constituents of the 27th Senate district have representation as soon as possible,” added Beshear.

Kentucky law dictates that the governor must issue the writ for a special election for a member of the General Assembly, if the vacancy occurs when the legislature is not in session.

The winner will take office immediately upon certification of the election results and the administration of the oath of office.
