Government Diversity Encouraged

Kellogg School of Management

An official with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says the racial tensions that emerged following the shooting last month of a black teenager by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri could have happened almost anywhere.

Roslyn Brock made the comment last week during a visit to eastern Kentucky. Brock chairs the organization’s board of directors. She says many communities with diverse populations lack sufficient employment of those groups on police forces.

However, she says the issue is bigger than that. Brock says all citizens need to actively participate in the selection of their leaders.

“Vote for their elected officials. Vote for their state officials, their national leaders, so that they would put people in office who would appreciate and understand their needs. One for policing, one for better schools, and one also for health care systems that serve their needs as well.” –Roslyn Brock

Brock says African-Americans should be just as concerned with black on black violence as they are with whites who cause them physical harm.
