Both of Kentucky’s U.S. Senators on Wednesday (April 30) voted against a bill that would have raised the minimum wage to ten dollars and ten cents an hour. The votes of Republicans Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul helped defeat the plan, which needed 60 votes to clear the chamber but only 54 were received.
McConnell says the proposal shows that what he calls “the liberal establishment” is out of ideas for improving the nation’s economy.
McConnell says Congress should be focused on creating jobs and helping the middle class. He says hiking the minimum wage could have cost as many as 17 thousand jobs in Kentucky and a million across the country.
McConnell believes the Obama Administration has done little to assist the nation’s economic recovery and Congress needs to focus on job creation, not proposals that put people out of work.
