Rand Paul Backs Sexual Assault Legislation

Politico

U.S. Senator Rand Paul says the rape and brutal beating of a female soldier from Kentucky convinced him that the military needs to change the way sexual assault cases are handled.

The Kentucky Republican was among those who voted for a bill that would have taken the reporting and prosecution of such cases outside the chain of command. The proposal failed by five votes.

Paul says the case involving the Kentucky woman was dismissed after a rape kit was lost and the victim’s assailant is still in the Navy. According to the senator, shifting the investigation and prosecution of such attacks outside the military would give everyone a better chance at justice.

Paul says there are 26 thousand cases of sexual assault reported in the military every year. He says it’s apparent the current system for investigating and prosecuting such attacks isn’t working.

Paul spoke on the Senator floor during Thursday’s debate.
