Lexington leaders are looking for ways to enhance management of the city's recycling center. Members of a city council committee reviewed recommendations on Tuesday (Feb. 18) following an internal audit of the Materials Recovery Facility.
Councilmember Peggy Henson asked about recyclables coming into the center from other counties.
“Don’t you think it would be a good idea to know if it’s really making money before we take on more product,” said Henson.
Acting Public Works Commissioner Charlie Martin says the agreement with other counties goes back to earlier efforts to clean up illegal dumps.
“One of the reasons this got set up was a way to encourage more recycling within the bluegrass region as opposed to people just dumping on sides of roads and things like that,” commented Martin.
Martin says the city is roughly breaking even on the cost for recycling versus selling recyclables. But, the public works director says, he and the council believe steps can be taken to come out ahead financially. A more detailed plan will be forthcoming in future weeks.
