Steady Economic Impact Projected For Bluegrass Army Depot

Bechtel Corporation

The chemical weapons clean-up at the Bluegrass Army Depot might provide a long-term economic opportunity.

A new study says the clean-up will create the kind of reliable, well-trained workforce needed by the private sector.  Congressman Andy Barr was present as the study was released Wednesday (September 4) morning.

With some planning now, Barr says the Depot could be made highly attractive to new employers.

“After a short ten years, a short decade, we’re gonna have a challenge in Madison County and in central Kentucky to make sure that we transition the workforce and the infrastructure that’s available for the future.” –Andy Barr

Barr also promised to help find the 400-thousand dollars needed for two additional studies.  Today’s report evaluated the depot’s workforce.  Other studies would evaluate its infrastructure, and help create a plan for attracting private industry. Clean-up work at the Depot could take another 12 years.
