Senior art exhibits to be held virtually

Morehead State University

Senior students in Morehead State's Department of Art and Design will be exhibiting their artwork to the public through virtual exhibits on Instagram.

Due to the closure of MSU to the public to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the annual senior exhibits, typically held in the Golding-Yang Gallery in the Claypool-Young Art Building, have been postponed until the fall semester for those who are able to participate. However, works from the shows will be featured on two Instagram accounts.

Both exhibits will feature work in all media, including painting, graphic design, photography, sculpture, ceramics and more.

Melissa Yungbluth, director of the Golding-Yang Gallery and instructor of art and design, was inspired to hold the exhibits online by other galleries around the world that are holding online art shows due to the threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Yungbluth said the exhibition is an essential rite of passage she didn't want the students to miss.

"Students are now losing a sense of community that comes along with exhibiting their work together," she said. "As a gallery director, it broke my heart to think that these students who have been working so hard towards this exhibition that was due to be installed the day we were supposed to return from Spring Break won't be getting this celebration of making. I view exhibitions like this as a grand finale and a celebration of the hard work. Yes, it's a part of graduating as an art student, but it's so much more special than that."
