Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s (BSCTC) Human Services program and Community Garden held an Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 22 on its Prestonsburg campus.
Rainy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of volunteers and visitors to the celebration, which included demonstrations on how to make potting soil, recycling, battery recycling, small-scale gardening and other sustainable efforts to better take care of the earth.
“I’m so proud of our Human Services students who brought this event together,” said Tammy Ball, professor and coordinator of the Human Services program. “When we talked about this months ago, I never dreamed it would be such an informative and fun event.”
Human Services students did a coloring contest with third-grade students at Prestonsburg Elementary School. The winners were: Carley Porter, Allison Howard, Queenie Paige Hatton, and Hunter Vaughn.
“This was so much fun,” said Ladonna Griffey, a human services student and president of the Student Government Association. “Part of what we wanted to do was make Earth Day something fun for the children while teaching them something about the earth.”
BSCTC has a community garden on its Prestonsburg campus. The garden is operated by college employees and volunteers. Last year, the garden produced more than 2,000 pounds of fresh produce, which was given to the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry of the St. James Episcopal Church in Prestonsburg.
