Two Fleming County School Principals Resign

City of Flemingsburg

Two Fleming County School principals will be leaving their positions at the end of the current school year.

Finance Director Greg Conway said Fleming County High School Principal Mark Leet and Ewing Elementary School Principal Luanne Applegate tendered their resignations on March 27 to be effective at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

"They both announced their resignations on the last Friday before spring break," Conway said. "That gave everyone a week to let it sink in before coming back to school. I've been there. I've resigned from a position as a principal before and it is very emotional. If I had been in their shoes, I would have done the same thing."

Conway said Leet began in his career as a teacher in the district before leaving and returning again in 2012 as principal.

"He worked for us three times, including the most recent," Conway said.

Leet said he is sorry to leave the district, but felt it was the best thing to do for his family.

"My resignation has nothing to do with the recent Diagnostic Review. It is a decision I made for the best interest of my family and myself. I am honoring the terms of my contract, but resigning now in order to give the Fleming County School District ample time to find a highly qualified replacement," Leet said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working in Fleming County Schools as I have been a resident of Fleming County my entire life and continue to have a vested interest in the success of our students. I am proud of what the staff has accomplished under my leadership."

The diagnostic review was a three-day review conducted by the Kentucky Department of Education and AdvancED in March. The results have not yet been returned to the district, according to Conway.

The review was the second conducted on the school district. The first one was conducted in March 2014, during which time KDE made a recommendation to have Leet removed from the district.

After protests from students and comments from community members, KDE agreed Leet would remain in the district.

According to Conway, Applegate resigned for personal reasons and would also leave her position at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. She has been with the district since 1999, when she began as a teacher in the district.

Fleming County Schools Superintendent Brian Creasman could not be reached for comment.
