Fleming County High School Wins Journalism Awards

Fleming County School System

Students of the Fleming County High School Journalism Department have won several statewide awards for the design and layout of their 2012-2013 school yearbook.

FCHS journalism adviser Carol Theiss, who has headed the department for 10 years, said the program is no stranger to winning awards.

"It has more than been my pleasure to be the adviser of The Fleming Countian over the past 10 years and I have been more than fortunate to have editors and their staffs that compete to win," said Theiss.

"Besides making a publication that Fleming County High School students will be proud to read, they have the ability to top their own creative juices, year after year. Winning this year, however, has a special meaning because it is a three-peat General Excellence win in Yearbook Class AA. The past three yearbook editors of Ellen Vice, Alex James and Dabney Crawford have set the example through hard work. Finally, over the past 10 years I have had students that have gone on to report, sell or do graphic arts for a living and I'm so thankful to have touched their lives," added Theiss.

Each year, the Kentucky High School Journalism Association, a division of the Kentucky Press Association, hosts a contest in which schools across the state can submit work done by students in newspapers, yearbooks and broadcasting. At the end of the contest, the results are posted on the KHSJA website.

This year, the group of students won first place for cover design, writing style, overall design, theme development, photography and general excellence. They won second place in overall courage and use graphics and won third place in advertising.

Dabney Crawford, who graduated at the end of the 2012-2013 school year and was the editor, said the theme for the yearbook was "Home."

"We chose the theme because it represents what Fleming County is to us. It's home. And, our community really comes together," Crawford said. "We've seen it recently. This is our home and we will always come together to protect it."

Crawford, who is currently majoring in accounting at Morehead State University, said she was very proud of all the students who worked on the yearbook together.

"It takes a group of people to do this," Crawford said. "Not just one person. And, I'm proud of everyone who worked on it."
