Imagination Library in Kentucky Schools

State Representative John Tilley wants to make the Imagination Library a statewide program for Kentucky. The initiative founded by entertainer Dolly Parton in Tennessee is an attempt to get pre-school children interested in books. It’s a public-private venture that mails free, hard cover books each month to children from birth to age five who’ve been registered for the program.

Tilley says 49 Kentucky counties are already participating on a volunteer basis. He says research indicates access to reading materials in the home enhances a child’s prospects for academic success…

The House Education Committee has approved the idea, though no funding has been set aside for it.
