House Passes Financial Literacy Commission Bill

Glass Door

The Kentucky House of Representatives today (Feb. 7) approved a bill that establishes a State Financial Literacy Commission to develop personal finance concepts for their inclusion in state academic standards. The measure is sponsored by Democrat Jim Glenn of Owensboro.

Glenn says many young people are leaving high school without money management skills.

“I have been teaching personal finance for over twenty years in the community college system. I wrote my doctoral dissertation in finance. It’s really a problem inside the state. I have personally worked on a number of these items. I have done workshops on how to save money when you have very little.” –Jim Glenn

Glenn adds his bill is similar to one adopted in Tennessee. It passed on a 94 to 0 vote.
