Morehead State University President Wayne D. Andrews, University of Pikeville President James L. Hurley and Stu Silberman, executive director of the Prichard Committee, joined forces recently at the Governor’s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership (GCIPL) held at Jenny Wiley State Park in Prestonsburg.
Parents in eastern Kentucky had the opportunity to participate in the award-winning GCIPL under collaboration between MSU, UPIKE and the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. GCIPL helps Kentucky parents become more involved in improving public schools to enhance academic achievement for all. In addition, GCIPL will help connect parent projects – a key part of the training – with their schools needs and resources.
Parents involved at Prestonsburg were from the counties of Boyd, Carter, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Johnson, Lawrence, Magoffin, Martin, Morgan, Perry, Pike and Rowan.
Two additional two-day sessions are scheduled for Sept. 27-28 and Oct. 25-26.
The eastern Kentucky GCIPL, an initiative of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, is funded by a $200,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) with additional matching funds of more than $50,000 being provided by the two universities and the Prichard Committee. The ARC grant was awarded to Morehead State University, which will contract with Prichard Committee to provide the leadership training. MSU also will emphasize the importance of parent involvement as part of its doctoral program in educational leadership.
