Rowan Schools Consider Tax Increase

Rowan County Schools Central Office

The Rowan County School Board has scheduled a public hearing for August 27th on a proposed four percent property tax increase. It takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the Proudfoot Administration Building.

School Superintendent Marvin Moore says, if approved, the higher tax would generate an additional $304,000 for the district…

"...that won't even cover the cost of the SEEK cut. I will give you an example of what it will cost an individual, if they had a piece of property...if they had $100,000, that would be approximately $20 more a year. This year, that piece of property, they would have paid $532. If the board passes this 4% next year, they will pay $552." - Marvin Moore

Moore says the school district has eliminated more than 50 positions from its payroll over the past five years and has done its best to cope with state and federal budget cuts. However, he says without additional revenue, it’ll be difficult to maintain existing programs.
