Fleming County To Offer Smart Shopping Program

Karmen Pirh Fitness

The Fleming County Extension Office will be offering a smart shopping for healthy living program that will focus on diabetes.

Extension Agent Donna Fryman said the program will help people who suffer from diabetes to see what healthy foods can be purchased and how those foods can be cooked.

"We are going to give product recommendations, cooking tips and share recipes," Fryman said. "We will also have food that can be sampled and we would like to have little notebooks for the guests."

The notebooks would contain information on healthy foods, recipes and other information about diabetes. One night of the program a pharmacist, who also suffers from diabetes, will come in to talk about over-the-counter medications that can help with diabetes.

According to Fryman, this diabetic program is new, but other programs have been conducted in the past.

"We do diabetic programs on occasion," Fryman said. "And, we were asked to do another one. We thought this would be a good way to show people how they can shop and cook healthy."

Fryman said the reason for doing the diabetic programs is the high incidence of diabetes in the area.

"We have a lot of people with diabetes in our area," she said. "As an educational institute, we get asked a lot of questions about it, so we try to do the programs to keep the public informed on how to live healthy and keep their diabetes under control."

The program will be at the Extension Office every Monday from March 31 to April 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. There is no cost but those wishing to participate should contact Fryman at the Extension Office at 606-845-4641.

"The program is meant to be done in a grocery store," Fryman said. "But, we won't be able to do that, so it is being done at our office."
