Fleming County Hospital Debt

State Representative Mike Denham says he’s confident that Fleming County Hospital’s board of directors will be able to restore the facility to financial health. The publicly-owned medical center has been losing money for several years and is projected to run a deficit this fiscal year of around a million dollars.

Denham admits he lacks firsthand knowledge of the hospital’s operations but says its leadership and its staff have been first-rate.

"You always have concerns...I would have to tell you that I had not been involved in that process. That's your Board of Directors and they have a very able board and management group...and they haven't discussed that issue with me, so I'm not that knowledgeable about it." -State Representative Mike Denham

However, Denham says he believes the Fleming County hospital will take the steps necessary to be successful. The medical center has struggled to pay off debt from the construction of its new, 32-million dollar facility, which opened five years ago. About 35 of its 54 beds are empty.
