Heroin Overdose Pilot Program Unveiled

USA Today

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and Attorney General Jack Conway have unveiled a pilot program to provide heroin overdose reversal kits at hospitals with the state's highest rates of heroin-related deaths.

The two Democrats spoke at a press conference in Frankfort on Tuesday (Jan. 6).

Conway says the kits will be provided free of charge to every overdose victim being released from participating hospitals in Louisville, Lexington and northern Kentucky. He says the program will save lives.

Conway says deaths from heroin overdose in Kentucky have increased tenfold since 2011 and the kits will make a difference. He is hoping the initiative can soon be expanded to other parts of Kentucky.
