Senior Citizen Scam Forum Planned

WSET

A free workshop on protecting senior citizens from fraud, identity theft and other scams is scheduled in Maysville. It’s sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions (KDFI) and takes place Thursday, June 19th at the Mason County Extension Office. The event will be held from 9am to 2pm.

KDFI’s Jennifer Doom says the event is part of a series of programs the department has arranged across the Commonwealth to combat the problem.  She says seniors are often targeted by scammers.

“They’re in a position where, they’ve hopefully accumulated the assets to last through their retirement years. So, therefore, they have some resources in hand. I think number two, they’re very willing to talk to people on the telephone, and once you actually had conversations with people, it becomes a whole lot easier for them to befriend or gain your trust.” –Jennifer Doom

Doom says participants can learn about the techniques of con artists and what safeguards can be used to stop them.
