About 80 sanitary sewer projects in Lexington over the next decade will impact many neighborhoods. With that in mind, city officials are working to notify residents to when bulldozers may be coming to their area of town.
Mark York, with the Division of Environmental Policy, says a project manager will look for ways to lay pipe in the most cost efficient manner.
“We know that we have to do these projects because we no longer want raw sewage over flowing into our creeks and streams. That needs to stop. But, at the same time, we don’t need to be writing checks haphazardly,” said York.
The total price of the ten year sewer improvement project is estimated at 600 million dollars. At some point, York says officials will go to the Lexington Council asking for a sanitary fee increase to pay for projects.
“There’s not been a time set yet when we’ll be looking at going to Council for another increase, but obviously over the course of the next ten years or more there will be an increase in the sanitary sewer fee,” added York.
When it’s all said and done, around 48 miles of sanitary sewer pipe will be replaced along with work on 15 different pump stations. York anticipates anywhere between six and seventeen projects to be undertaken each year in Lexington.
