A popular local radio program will make a return this Labor Day weekend.
Friends & Folk aired on WMKY (90.3FM) from 1991 to 1998. More than 300 programs were produced in the series which could be heard every Saturday afternoon.
Steve Young was host and producer of the popular radio series. Young was joined by friends Glenn Buckner and Harvey Pennington. The three would sings songs, tell jokes and stories – all in good fun and friendship.
“The original recordings were performed at our homes each week and then I mixed-down the final production at WMKY’s studios,” remarked Young. “The program was folk music, comedy and a folksy atmosphere. The camaraderie and music with Glenn and Harvey, as well as hearing from our listeners is what we enjoyed most,” added Young.
Besides the weekly radio program, the three friends and musicians also performed at local music festivals, fairs and state parks including MSU’s Appalachian Celebration and Folkfest.
“We got to meet a lot of people and the radio program helped promote our concerts,” said Young. “WMKY provided the opportunity and support which gave us the chance to get together each week, enjoy our friendship and explore our love of folk music,” added Young.
