Chinese Pipa Musician Presents Concert for Makings of a Master Exhibit in Booneville

Kentucky.gov

Kentucky master pipa player Hong Shao will give a free performance and presentation on traditional Chinese music 12:30 p.m., Jan. 26 at Owsley County Public Library.

The program is part of the Kentucky Arts Council’s “Makings of a Master” traveling exhibit, which will be in Owsley County through Feb. 28. The library is at 185 Kentucky Hwy 11 in Booneville.

Shao is an adjudicated member of the arts council’s Performing Artists and Teaching Artists directories and has received a Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant.

“Makings of a Master” contains seven display cases housing a variety of musical instruments, tools and artworks made by master tradition bearers, interpretive panels, display photos and quotes, along with a push-button video display.

JoAnne Richardson, a staff member at Owsley County Public Library and a graduate of the arts council’s Community Scholars Program, said Shao’s performance will satisfy a multitude of local interests among the students the library has invited for the presentation.

“We have students coming who are interested in instruments. We have those who are interested in the performing arts, and those who are interested in Appalachian studies. We all look forward to seeing how this person, who was not born here, has become a part of Kentucky and combined her culture with ours to make something new,” Richardson said. “We’ve also invited people from the community who play mandolin and banjo and have a love of music and musical instruments, who I think will appreciate her craft.”
