Kentucky Gallery Featured at Kentucky Crafted: The Market

Sarah Spradlin

Visitors to Kentucky Crafted: The Market will have an additional area to shop in this year – The Kentucky Gallery.

The Kentucky Gallery is a unique, curated shopping experience, featuring the work of 29 artists who are affiliated with one or more arts council programs. All of the work in the exhibit is for sale.

The Gallery builds on the success of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted @ the Breeders’ Cup Festival shop.

“Kentucky Crafted @ the Breeders’ Cup Festival was immensely popular, and we feel confident that adding that same kind of curated shopping experience to The Market will enhance what is already a high-quality exhibition of the best in Kentucky art and craft,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director.

Artists Sarah Spradlin and Tonya Vance, from Paris and Lexington, respectively, are both in their first year as Kentucky Crafted artists and will have work in The Kentucky Gallery.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and I was delighted and jumped on it immediately,” Spradlin said. “So many people go through The Market. It’s good for getting your name out. This is the best thing that could happen with Kentucky Crafted, to give us this wonderful exposure as artists.”

“I’m very excited and honored to be included in this group of artists,” Vance said. “I appreciate the opportunity to get my pieces out there, and for people coming to The Market to see them. It’s great exposure, especially after just being juried into Kentucky Crafted last year.”

In addition to adding a new element to Kentucky Crafted: The Market, The Kentucky Gallery gives an opportunity to Kentucky Crafted artists who would not ordinarily participate in The Market because of the wholesale requirement of booth exhibitors. It gives them the opportunity to see The Market at work from the side of the exhibitors.

“I don’t have enough work to sell wholesale and haven’t done a fair like that before, so this will be really nice to test the waters,” said Vance.

“What kept me from doing The Market as a booth exhibitor is I had been traveling and wasn’t ready to do wholesale,” said Spradlin. “The Kentucky Gallery is a great alternative for me, and I think it will help attract more fine artists to arts council and Kentucky Crafted.”

Also among the artists showing in The Kentucky Gallery is 2015 Governor’s Awards in the Arts honoree Linda Fifield of McKee. Fifield has been a Kentucky Crafted artist for several years, but has never shown at The Market.

“The Kentucky Gallery provides a new way to be represented at a quality art sales event in Kentucky,” Fifield said. “I'm delighted to share a space alongside so many of Kentucky’s most creative and hard-working artists and craftsmen.”
