Morehead State University's Kentucky Folk Art Center announced its upcoming exhibition, “Snakes! Depictions of the Serpent in Kentucky Folk Art.”
The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will remain on display through May.
The exhibition features more than 70 works by self-taught artists that prominently depict snakes. The pieces were selected from KFAC’s permanent collection and from the private collection of Richard and Magdalena Mook of Lexington. While many of the works featured are walking sticks, the exhibition also presents a number of paintings and other sculptures.
“KFAC has wanted to do this exhibition for quite a while,” said Taral Thompson, KFAC curator. “The snake or serpent is a dominant image in folk art from this region. This owes largely to the serpent’s role in the Bible and to the fact that much of Kentucky is excellent snake habitat. While we know that many people have a fear of snakes, we promise that none of these will bite.”
Kentucky Folk Art Center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of Morehead State University. The Center is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
