Rowan County Doughboy Statue Unveiling Planned for Nov. 11

John Flavell

After years of planning and fundraising for its restoration, the doughboy statue in Morehead is slated for a public unveiling next Tuesday, Nov. 11 on Veterans Day.

The statue was removed months ago to be cleaned and to give the Rowan County Veterans Foundation a chance to strengthen the pedestal on which the statue stands.

It was returned to its rightful place near the Rowan County Arts Center, site of the olf Rowan County Courthouse.

Danny Knipp is president of the Veterans Foundation:

“We have rebuilt the pedestal which the doughboy sits on. The original pedestal was built in 1919 and it was beginning to decay, so we put up a new one. The doughboy was really deteriorating, we redid him, so we’ve got a completely new pedestal and doughboy. We’ll have an unveiling at 11 o’clock next Tuesday…..eleven, eleven, eleven.” –Danny Knipp

The project was funded with a ten thousand dollar grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as private donations.
