Military Initiatives to host Women’s History Month event

University of Kentucky USAF ROTC

Morehead State’s Office of Military Initiatives will host an event to commemorate Women’s History Month on Tuesday, March 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in ballrooms A and B of the Adron Doran University Center (ADUC).

The event will include a panel discussion with representatives from the Kentucky Veterans Administration Women’s Outreach Department and other professional leaders.

Panelists will include:

Lt. Col. April Brown, program manager for veteran’s employment, education and training with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. Brown has 29 years of military service with the Kentucky National Guard and has held numerous leadership positions to include multiple company and battalion commands. She is a retired police sergeant from the Lexington Division of Police with 20 years of service.

Lt. Col. Kathleen Buss, commander of the U.S. Air Force ROTC at the University of Kentucky. Buss entered the Air Force in 1998 after graduating from the Air Force Academy. After earning her wings with distinguished graduate honors, Lieutenant Colonel Buss was assigned to Charleston Air Force Base in South Carolina, where she was an instructor and demonstration pilot, flew as an aircraft commander in the elite special operations force, and amassed more than 500 combat hours in support of operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. She was then stationed at the Pentagon as branch chief for strategy and plans on the air force’s International Affairs team. Following her Pentagon tour, Buss served in a diplomatic role at the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia.

Robyn C. Stuart, owner and operator of D.B. Bourbon Candy, LLC. She served in the U.S. Army for six years and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, and was also stationed at two bases in Germany, Rheinberg and Mönchengladbach. She has received numerous awards, including the Veteran Women Acts of Service Award, the People in Business to Know Award and the Who’s Who in Business Award.

Dr. Silas Session, director of Military Initiatives at MSU, said those who attend the panel will learn more about the roles women play in the military.

“Attendees will gain an appreciation for the sacrifice women military members and family members have given,” he said. “They will be encouraged by their examples and leadership tips from different women with different backgrounds.”

The event is free and open to the public.
