The Maysville Fire Department will host a cadet training program this summer designed for junior firefighters.
The program, according to MFD Assistant Chief Kevin Doyle, is open to male and female youth across the region, ages 15 to 18.
"This provides cadets the opportunity to find out what they need to do to become a firefighter," Doyle said. He also noted graduates of the program gives the MFD a pool of candidate to hire from.
The application deadline is Wednesday, April 15 and applications are available at the department's Station No. 1 location at Bridge Street in downtown.
Doyle said the course teaches basic skills and knowledge necessary to become a firefighter, which can help participants determine if a career in fire service is what they want or the profession is not for them.
The cadet program will be held no earlier than June 8 and will end no later than Aug. 7. Doyle said they chose the summer months to host the training so there would be no conflicts with the student's school schedules and activities.
There will be a total of 15, six-hour session, most of which will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and one Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Training will take place at the department's training center on Martha Comer Drive and students are required to have their own transportation. Cadets will participate in classroom and practical skills training and safety equipment will be provided, Doyle said.
Doyle said each cadet will be issued a Kentucky Firefighter number through the Kentucky State Fire Commission and will receive applicable training hours to be entered in the state fire training recording system.
Applications should be submitted to the Maysville Fire Department Cadet Training Program, 215 Bridge Street, Maysville, Ky. 41056. Questions should be directed to Doyle at 606-564-2714.
