Lexington Businessman Believes Africa Could Be Major Food Producer

The Guardian

Alltech Founder and President Pearse Lyons says the African continent could become the new breadbasket of the world. He suggested the possibility on Monday (May 19) during his company’s international agribusiness symposium in Fayette County.

Lyons says Africa is responsible for ten percent of the world’s agricultural output but has 25 percent of its arable land.

Lyons says the African continent is large enough to fit the United States, China and Europe within its contours and that underscores its’ agricultural potential. He believes Africa has such potential as a major food producer.

The theme of this year’s Alltech conference is “What if?” and is examining possibilities in modern farming, technology and life sciences. It continues through Wednesday at the Lexington Convention Center.
