Kentucky Talks Hemp In Washington

US News

Two Kentucky elected officials are making the case for industrial hemp in Washington, D.C.

Representative Thomas Massie and Agriculture Commissioner James Comer briefed congressional staffers on the benefits of the crop at a meeting September 10) hosted by the nonprofit group Vote Hemp.

The two have long pushed congress to legalize the crop. A recent announcement by the federal government stated they not challenge state laws legalizing marijuana.

Earlier this year, Kentucky passed a law legalizing the farming of hemp, which is distinct from its cousin crop, marijuana. James Comer says because hemp is not defined in the Controlled Substances Act, the federal decision effectively paves the way for hemp’s legal cultivation in Kentucky.

Comer believes Congressional action is necessary to make the hemp legal permanently. But he says won’t wait on Congress forever, and he plans to issue hemp permits early next year.

“You know how difficult it is to pass any type of legislation in Washington. I don't think we can afford to wait. The first few states to get on board will be the states where the industry is created.” –James Comer

There are currently two bills in front of Congressional committees which would exempt hemp from the federal definition of marijuana. An amendment to the un-passed farm bill would also legalize hemp production.
