Hundreds of children’s advocacy supporters lined the hallways of the Capitol Thursday, hoping to spotlight children’s safety, health, and education issues.
Kentucky Youth Advocates director Terry Brooks says his focus this year is on passing legislation that fixes a loophole in the state’s training on child abuse.
"We know that while childcare workers and medical professionals in Kentucky are required to have training to recognize the signs of child abuse, interestingly the one group that doesn't have any requirements are public school educators. So you think about where kids are... kids are in public schools," he told WUKY.
Brooks says his organization is working with lawmakers in the House and Senate to craft twin measures that would require every Kentucky public school employee to receive training every other year.
Children’s Advocacy Day was started in 2004.
