High Winds Impacting Thousands In The Bluegrass

High winds have caused damage, power outages and road closures throughout Kentucky.

The major impact is at Versailles Road between New Circle and Man O’ War and that area is expected to be shut down until at least 8:00 tonight.  Lexington Police are encouraging people who live in that area to stay home if possible.

By noon today, more than 15,000 Kentucky Utilities customers were without power in Fayette County alone and 32 outages were reported in Lexington.

Across the state, strong winds pushed over a semi truck in Fleming County, a wall being built for the new library in Bourbon County collapsed and in Harrodsburg, a driver was taken to the hospital after a tree fell on her car.

A strong wind advisory remains in effect until 7:00 pm and temperatures are expected to plummet into the lower 30’s in the overnight.

Update from Fayette County Public Schools (2:55 PM):

With the closure of Versailles Road until 8 p.m., our transportation department will be using alternate routes whenever possible to get students home from school at Rosa Parks Elementary, Beaumont Middle and Dunbar High School. We will be unable to run a handful of routes to some stops along Versailles and we are contacting families who are impacted directly to make alternate arrangements to get their children home from school.
