Officials with Morehead-Rowan County Tourism are examining the potential for new art installations in the area.

The topic was discussed during the regular November meeting of Morehead City Council.  Morehead-Rowan County Tourism Executive Director Joy Brown says the idea was brought forth by longtime community member and Morehead State University professor Edna Schack.

Brown says the turtle statues are still very much in the idea stages, but she has been in contact with the cultural development organization LexArts, and she is excited about the possibilities.

The trail is named in honor of Daniel Boone. Sheltowee is the name given to Boone by Chief Blackfish of the Shawnee tribe, meaning “Big Turtle.”

Brown says if plans for the statues move forward, it would bring artists to the area, businesses could have grand openings for the installations and it would be another tour visitors to the area could enjoy.
