Local Sales Tax Option Sponsor

The sponsor of legislation in the Kentucky House that could give local governments a sales tax option calls the concept “innovative and practical”. State Representative Tommy Thompson is a Democrat from Owensboro.

He says Kentucky’s cities and counties currently lack alternatives to raise revenue for capital projects to improve their quality of life. The federal and state governments, he notes, have been scaling back their support for local government…

The bill Thompson is pushing would place a constitutional amendment on the Kentucky ballot this fall. If approved, local governments could ask their voters to approve a sales tax of up to one percent for specific projects. The tax would expire when the construction is completed.
