Rowan County's incoming superintendent said he will be taking over a district that is in solid financial shape, despite years of state funding cuts.

John Maxey will replace the retiring Marvin Moore on July 1.

Maxey credits good planning by Moore and the Rowan school board for allowing the district to keep as many of its programs and jobs as possible in place.

Maxey will be working alongside Moore and the board over the next two months to plan the Rowan school system's 2018-19 budget.
